What to expect
This unforgettable journey crosses four distinct ecological zones. You begin by climbing the switchbacks of the High Atlas mountain range, reaching the snowy altitude of the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. Descending past the UNESCO World Heritage fortress of Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, you enter the Thousand Kasbahs highway through the fragrant Valley of the Roses. Continuing past the vertical limestone walls of the Todra Gorges, the landscape opens into the black stone desert of the Tafilalet before the sudden, breathtaking emergence of the soaring golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Tips from our drivers
- We recommend departing Marrakech by 07:00 AM to ensure you cross the High Atlas before noon and arrive in Merzouga before twilight.
- If anyone in your party is prone to motion sickness, request front-row seating and ask your chauffeur for gentle pacing on the Tichka curves.
Frequently asked questions
Is it possible to complete the transfer from Marrakech to Merzouga in a single day?
Yes. A direct private transfer takes approximately 8.5 to 9 hours of driving time plus meal stops. By departing Marrakech early around 07:00 AM, you arrive at Erg Chebbi around 17:00 PM, comfortably in time for an evening camel trek into your desert camp.
Can we split this route into a 2-day or 3-day custom trip?
Yes! If you prefer a more leisurely journey with an overnight stay in the Dades Valley or Ouarzazate, our team can arrange a multi-day private desert tour with the same dedicated chauffeur.
How do we reach our desert camp inside the dunes once we arrive in Merzouga?
Standard road vehicles cannot drive on deep sand dunes. We drive you to your camp’s dedicated staging lodge at the dune perimeter, where the camp’s 4x4 or camel guide meets you to transport you across the sand to your private tent.
What should we pack for the drive across the High Atlas and Sahara?
Pack in layers. The Tizi n’Tichka pass can be cold or breezy, while southern valleys can be warm. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive to mountain roads, and a reusable water bottle (we provide complimentary bottled water onboard).
